The Itatiaia municipality, is 167 km away from the city of Rio de Janeiro, after two hours and 30 minutes right, and is considered to be a great tourist attraction of the state.
The Itatiaia National Park, the oldest conservation unit in Brazil, is among the five best places in the country to watch birds, because it has in its territory endemic species, which attracts researchers from all over the world. The park is divided in two parts, the high and low, and concentrates a great vegetation complex and a variety of fauna and flora.
On the low part, it is possible to visit countless waterfalls, rivers, and streams, as well as the old Fauna and Flora Museum, and Mirante do Adeus overlook. The abundant Atlantic Forest, the Funil Dam, and the Serra do Mar are also attractions of this part of the park. On the high part is the highest point of the state of Rio de Janeiro, the Pico das Agulhas Negras peak. Other attractions of impressive beauty are the rock formations of Maciço do Itatiaia, such as Prateleiras, the Rocks of Tartaruga and Maçã, the Couto Rock, Altar Rock, among others, which attract mountain climbers, alpinists, bird watchers, and nature lovers from all over Brazil.
Founded in 1929, the Finnish Colony of Penedo is a touristic neighborhood where the material that helps preserve the memory of its colonizers is kept. It also has hotels and inns to serve the most demanding kind of tourists that visit the region. Besides that, it offers near 40 restaurants of high-end national and international gastronomy, and the typical dishes of trout, as well as inviting bars and cafés, and the abundant market of small stores scattered throughout the Commercial Center and in the small and big shopping malls. Another attractive of the Penedo region is the Santa Claus House, which is famous by its grand and luxurious Christmas decoration that fascinates children and adults.
