The architectural complex that houses the museum has developed from Forte de Santiago, in Ponta do Calabouço, one of the strategic sites for Rio de Janeiro territory defense.
Museu Histórico Nacional, created in 1922, is one of the most important Brazilian museums, gathering a collection of over 287.000 items, among them the largest Latin America’s numismatics collection.
